Over 4,000 soldiers from the six SCO countries took part in Friday's military exercise in Russia's Chelyabinsk, the final phase of a 9-day drill.

Their task is to eradicate terrorist militants attempting to attack a border town, save civilian hostages and kill international terrorists which come to support them. CRI reporter Xu Weiyi has the story.

Reporter: The "Peace Mission 2007" anti-terrorism drill is the first military exercise involving all SCO members since the organization was established in 2001. It's also the first joint drill observed by leaders of member countries.

The exercise involves airborne forces, fighter-bombers, military helicopters, armored vehicles and other heavy weapons.

Russian director of the mission Vladimir Moltenskoy says the joint drill is aimed at intensifying exchanges and cooperation in defense and security, enhancing the capabilities of their armed forces in collectively countering terrorism and promoting regional peace, security and stability

"At the moment, the international community needs to jointly fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism. In addition, drug and weapon trafficking are also problems we have to deal with. Our military excise doesn't target any third party."

About 1,600 Chinese soldiers take part in the drill. China's deputy director of the mission, Qian Lihua, says Chinese forces hopes to learn military thoughts, tactics and advanced management from other parties.

"Terrorism is a major threat facing all humans. The Chinese army has conducted a series of military exercises, mainly to show our resolve, means and capability to fight against terrorism. We talk about how to maintain world peace and stability when we communicate with other armies."
