Hi there, thanks for checking this out today. I'm Virginia Cha at the cnn center in Atlanta, with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Are you ready for another health care overhaul plan? Well, Democratic Senator Max Baucus has unveiled a bill today that he says will lower health care costs and provide quality affordable coverage. Baucus who chairs the Senate Finance Committee says his committee will begin debating the legislation next week. Baucus says it still has a long way to go, but he says he thinks it will get the votes.
The Afghanistan Election Commission announced that President Hamid Karzai won more than 50% of the vote in the recent presidential election. And that avoids a run-off. This results come as European Union observers say there was a massive fraud in the election. Karzai called those comments "irresponsible".
Former President Jimmy Carter sounded off on congressman John Wilson for heckling President Obama last week. Mr. Carter told NBC's Byrne William he believes racism motivated the "You Lie" outburst and that is part of a deeper backlash against the president. Meantime Representative John Wilson has been formally admonished by house lawmakers for shouting "You Lie" during the president's speech last week. The office of the house historians says this is the first time in 220 years that the house has disciplined a member for speaking out. The resolution of disapproval passed mostly along party lines. Wilson said the resolution was a waste of time, and noted that his apology to the President had already been accepted.
Authorities spent hours trying to give a rapist and murderer a lethal injection, but his veins apparently kept collapsing. Now the governor of Ohio has called off the execution for at least a week. Romell Broom raped and stamped a 14-year girl in 1984. One death penalty scholar says this opens the door to a legal challenge that could complicate things even more.
