Hello, I'm Chris Barrow with the BBC News.

The European Union has strongly condemned the authorities in Belarus for what it called arbitrary and unexplained arrests and detentions before and after the falsified presidential election in August. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs said the EU expected Belarus to immediately release all those detained on political grounds. A Polish MEP Robert Biedron has called for tougher sanctions than those currently agreed by the block.

The sanctions should be real and should directly affect Lukashenko's regime. I must remind that a few years ago, there were more serious sanctions in the less serious situation in Belarus and included 170 people. And today, in this very serious situation, we talk only about 20 people, excluding Mr. Lukashenko.

Strong winds and extreme heat are threatening to hamper efforts to contain more than 20 wildfires in the US state of California. Peter Bowes reports.

With temperatures hitting a record high of 49 celsius in the Los Angeles area over the weekend, conditions are ripe for wildfires to spread rapidly. Near the city of San Bernardino to the east of L.A., a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used for a photo opportunity at a baby gender reveal party has been blamed for sparking a huge blaze in the area. The organizers of the party could face charges. Weather forecasters are warning that could be worse to come with strong hot winds due to engulf the region late on Tuesday.

The fiancee of the murdered Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi has denounced the Saudi authorities for the final sentences related to his killing two years ago in Istanbul. The court ordered eight jail terms, ranging from seven to twenty years, but none of the guilty were named. And Mr. Khashoggi's fiancee Hatice Cengiz called it a mockery of justice. The journalist was attacked by a Saudi hit squad inside the Saudi embassy in Istanbul, and his body dismembered and never found.

The French Soprano Christiane Eda-Pierre who was the country's first female black opera singer to gain international fame, has died at the age of 88. Eda-Pierre was born into an intellectual family in the French Caribbean island of Martinique. Her career saw her grace stages in London, Vienna, and New York, where she sang with Luciano Pavarotti. She actively promoted fellow black artists in different fields.

And that's the latest BBC news.
