This is the BBC news. Hello, I'm Jonathan Izard.

A gunman who opened fire on the congregation of a synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh has killed eleven people and wounded six. Four of the injured were police officers who confronted the man. He was armed with three handguns and an assault rifle. A Jewish civil rights group said it believed this was the deadliest attack on Jews in US history. Jack Dan Johnson reports. At 10 am just after the Saturday morning service started, shooting was reported inside the Tree of Life congregation of synagogue. Teams of armed police quickly covered the quiet Squirrel Hill suburb, and people were warned to stay indoors until the suspect could be tracked down. The attacker is believed to be Robert Bowers, a 46 year-old who was heavily armed with pistols and assault rifle, and social media accounts filled with anti-Semitic hate. He is reported to have shouted "kill all Jews" as he opened fire. This was quickly treated as a hate crime and the FBI is leading the investigation.

Armed officers are guarding synagogues across the US. Anti-Semitic attacks have been on the rise here in recent years. President Trump says he will travel to Pittsburgh after the synagogue shootings, which he described as an evil anti-Semitic attack. The president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Jeff Finkelstein condemned the assault. Now, I'm just sad. I just, my heart goes out to all these families. This should not be happening, period. It should not be happening in a synagogue. It should not be happening in our neighborhood here in Squirrel Hill. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was appalled by the attack.

In Britain, a helicopter belonging to the Thai billionaire businessman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, has crashed and burst into flames at Leicester City Football Club. Witnesses said it'd taken off from inside this stadium an hour after a match between Leicester and West Ham before crashing out of control into a car park near the ground. Our correspondent Jon Donnison reports. The crash happened shortly before nine o'clock, around an hour and a half after the final whistle in Leicester City's game with West Ham. Broadcasters covering the match described the helicopter taking off from the pitch. Eyewitnesses then say it suddenly spun out of control before crashing into a car park outside the ground. Television picture showed it's engulfed in a ball of fire. Emergency services are at the scene. It's not known if Leicester's owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was on board. The Thai billionaire bought Leicester City in 2010 and has been credited with building the team that won the Premier League six years later.
