Man 1: It's not enough Hansen won the Carnegie Scholarship.

Man 2: No, he has to have it all for himself.

Bender: It's the first time the Carnegie prize has been split. Hansen's all bent.

Neilson: Rumor is he's got his sights set on Wheeler Lab, the new military think tank at M.I.T.

Bender: They're only taking one this year. Hansen's used to being picked first.

Neilson: Oh, yeah, he's wasted on math. He should be running for president.

John: There could be a mathematical explanation for how bad your tie is.

Neilson: Thank you. Neilson, symbol cryptography.

Bender: Neils here broke a Jap code. Helped rid the world of fascism. At least that's what he tells the girls, eh, Neils? The name's Bender. Atomic physics. And you are?

Sol: Am I late?

Bender: Yes?Mr. Sol.

Sol: Oh, good. Uh, hi. Sol. Richard Sol.

Hansen: The burden of genius.

Bender: There he is.

Hansen: So many supplicants, and so little time. Mr. Sol.

Sol: How are you, sir?

Hansen: Ah, Bender. Nice to see you.

Bender: Congratulations, Mr. Hansen.

Hansen: Ah, thank you. I'll take another.

John: Excuse me?

Hansen: A thousand pardons. I simply assumed you were the waiter.

Neilson: Play nice, Hansen.

Bender: Nice is not Hansen's strong suit.

Hansen: Honest mistake.

John: Well, Martin Hansen. It is Martin, isn't it?

Hansen: Why, yes, John, it is.

John: I imagine you're getting quite used to miscalculation. I've read your pre-prints-- Both of them. The one on Nazi ciphers, and the other one on non-linear equations, and I am supremely confident that there is not a single seminal or innovative idea in either one of them. Enjoy your punch.

Hansen: Gentlemen, meet John Nash, the mysterious West Virginia genius. The other winner of the distinguished Carnegie Scholarship.

1. Carnegie Scholarship

Andrew Carnegie Scholarship

2. Hansen's all bent.

Bent 这里的意思是“upset 沮丧”,所以这句话就是说“Hansen is very upset.”

3. set one's sights on

这个片语的意思是“have as a goal目标,打算”,比如:She's set her sights on law school.

4.  Wheeler Lab

    Nash equilibrium

In game theory, the Nash equilibrium (named after John Forbes Nash, who proposed it) is a solution concept of a game involving two or more players, in which no player has anything to gain by changing only his or her own strategy unilaterally. If each player has chosen a strategy and no player can benefit by changing his or her strategy while the other players keep theirs unchanged, then the current set of strategy choices and the corresponding payoffs constitute a Nash equilibrium.

Stated simply, A and B are in Nash equilibrium if A is making the best decision A can, taking into account B's decision, and B is making the best decision B can, taking into account A's decision. Likewise, many players are in Nash equilibrium if each one is making the best decision that they can, taking into account the decisions of the others. However, Nash equilibrium does not necessarily mean the best cumulative payoff for all the players involved; in many cases all the players might improve their payoffs if they could somehow agree on strategies different from the Nash equilibrium (eg. competing businessmen forming a cartel in order to increase their profits). Adam Smith

Scottish philosopher Adam Smith is the author of the 1776 book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations(《国富论》), a classic of modern economics beloved especially by free market advocates. He began his academic career as a professor of logic and moral philosophy in Glasgow (1751-64), but after about 1748 he was famously part of the Edinburgh intellectual circle that included David Hume. Smith gained international attention for his 1759 examination of societal ethics, Theory of Moral Sentiments, in which he argued that people are naturally empathetic to those suffering in their midst. But his Wealth of Nations secured Smith's fame -- the book sold out five editions during his lifetime, including revised versions in 1784 and 1789. He is credited with being the first to examine the importance of the division of labor and worker productivity, and for advancing the idea that free markets thrive on the basis of mutual self-interest. Although Smith warned against monopolies and mercantilism, his notion that markets are driven toward the public good by an "invisible hand" has made him a venerated figure among free market doctrinaires. He spent his last years in Edinburgh as a government official, as the Commissioner of Customs.

Most sources list his birthdate as 5 June 1723, the date of his baptism. His father died before Smith was born; Smith lived with his mother most of his life and never married. (Who2biography)

John: Does anyone else feel she should be moving in slow motion?

Bender: Will she want a large wedding, ya think?

Sol: Shall we say swords, gentlemen? Pistols at dawn?

Hansen: Have you remembered nothing? Recall the lessons of Adam Smith, the father of modern economics.

    Sol: "In competition...”

Sol and Neilson: “… individual ambition serves the common good.'' Exactly.

Neilson: Every man for himself, gentlemen.

Bender: And those who strike out are stuck with her friends.

Hansen: I'm not gonna strike out.

Sol: You can lead a blonde to water, but you can't make her drink.

Hansen: I don't think he said that.

Sol: Nobody move. She's looking over here. She's looking at Nash.

Hansen: Oh, God. He mayhave the upper hand now, but wait until he opens his mouth. Remember the last time?

Bender: Oh, yes, that was one for the history books.

    John: Adam Smith needs revision.

Hansen: What are you talking about?

John: If we all go for the blonde, we block each other. Not a single one of us is gonna get her. So then we go for her friends, but they will all give us the cold shoulder, because nobody likes to be second choice. Well, what if no one goes for the blonde? We don't get in each other's way, and we don't insult the other girls. That's the only way we win. That's the only way we all get laid. Adam Smith said the best result comes from everyone in the group doing what's best for himself, right? That's what he said, right?

    Hansen: Right.

John: Incomplete. Incomplete, okay? Because the best result will come from everyone in the group doing what's best for himself and the group.

    1. slow motion

The empty car rolled down the hill in slow motion and nobody could do anything to stop it.

    2. strike out

这个动词短语这里的意思是指“(of a person or effort) to fail失败”,比如:His next two business ventures struck out.

    3. have the upper hand

Once you let Jeff get the upper hand there'll be no stopping him.

have the upper hand 作为一个片语的意思是“have power and control over someone or a situation掌控局面,掌管某人”,我们来看个例子:At half time, the Italian team seem to have the upper hand.

    4. cold shoulder

这个片语的意思是“deliberate coldness or disregard, a slight or snub冷遇,冷淡,轻视”,我们来看个例子: When I said hello to her in the library, she gave me the cold shoulder and walked away.
